Stage Play "Black, White & Sunshine" (Sun, Aug 4th @7pm), MATCH - Midtown Arts and Theater Center Houston, Sunday, 04. August 2019

Produced by Houston Play On Purpose and written and directed by Holly Charles, the groundbreaking stage play "Black, White & Sunshine" sheds light on the disproportionality of minority children swept into both the juvenile justice and child welfare systems.  While various procedures are in place to protect underserved youth, Sunshine exposes how one-size fits all policies and legislation often do a disservice to children of color and those born into less fortunate circumstances.
Synopsis:
"Black, White & Sunshine" shares the heartbreaking tale of a teenaged boy (Ricky) who falls victim to the overgeneralization of zero tolerance policies in schools, prompting a 3-year jail sentence that forever changes the dynamics of his family. Although he’s paid his debt to society, his first felony conviction will forever hinder his ability to enjoy true freedom. Haunted by the guilt and “what if’s” of a complicated past, the now thirty-something convict, facing his third strike, has lost faith in the justice system, as well as his young, inexperienced public defender (Tabatha). Through their court-appointed visits, both parties discover the danger of apathy and fixed mindsets. The ensemble cast displays the complexities of life, urging us all towards human kindness, compassion and recognition that life is not all ‘Black and White’.
