LGBTQ Identity Development as Mindfulness In Action
with Dave Shannon, LICSW
The hallmark of LGBTQ sexual and gender identity development is mindfulness.  Through their coming out processes, LGBTQ people have moved from places of internal isolation and disconnection to self-knowing and connectedness.  Their desires and abilities to be aware of their deepest feelings as well as to acknowledge and honor them, without judgment, are mindfulness in action.  By moving towards and accepting their authentic selves, LGBTQ people are uniquely poised to create and deepen connections with others.  How can psychotherapists more deeply understand their LGBTQ clients’ unique processes and skills? More importantly, how can psychotherapists deepen their work with these clients by creatively using specific mindfulness practices?
At the end of this event, participants will be able to:
1. describe the layers of impact that sociopolitical forces have on LGBTQ people as they navigate their lives.2. identify the unique strengths and skills that LGBTQ people bring to both mindfulness practice and the process of psychotherapy.3. utilize specific meditation practices that build on LGBTQ people’s strengths and skills as they deepen their psychological well-being.
