John Howard Sanden: "The Norman Rockwell Mystery", Salmagundi Club, Friday, 13. December 2019

This program presents the amazing story of one of the most widely accepted deceptions in art history. A great museum, experts and specialists, scholarly art journals—all were fooled for more than three years. Portrait artist John Howard Sanden was the lone voice that said that a fraud was being perpetrated. He was ignored and ridiculed by the officials whose reputations he was trying to save. A great masterpiece had been hidden from all human eyes for more than thirty years, and might still be lost, but for the alarm being sounded. As part of his analysis, portraitist Sanden paints his own replica of a portion of the great original—the step-step demonstration is included in the screen presentation.
