[FICON 2019] Criminal Justice: A Community Conversation, Larry K. Lewis Education Center, WCCC Northwest Campus, Thursday, 03. October 2019

What would it look like to center "justice" in Detroit's criminal justice system?

This year at FICON, we are mixing things up and expanding our scope and vision. Responding to calls for more interaction and deeper dives into critical issues impacting our communities' futures, we are opening up the conference to create more space for conversation, dialogue, and community-based solutions. The morning of the conference will feature keynote addresses and the afternoon is dedicated to powerful and generative community conversations using OpenSpace technology which will be explained and supported by professional facilitators, a model that has been used successfully worldwide to generate powerful conversations around meaningful issues.

In the morning we are honored to feature two speakers: Detroit mother and community leader, Siwatu-Salma Ra, who will share her lived and ongoing struggle for justice and freedom from Detroit's criminal justice system and decidedly unjust mandatory sentencing laws. Participants will also benefit from the wisdom, vision, and analysis of racial justice lawyer, Amanda Alexander, who is the founding Executive Director of the Detroit Justice Center, a nonprofit working alongside communities to create economic opportunities, transform the justice system and promote equitable and just cities.

Following these presentations, participants will be guided in how to use OpenSpace technology to create and host their own sessions designed to generate authentic engagement around questions branching off of this year's conference theme: What would it look like to center "justice" in Detroit's criminal justice system?

At the end of the day, we will close with a community circle and share lessons learned and key take-aways.

We welcome your participation and invite you to invite those who have a stake in and passion for this conversation.

All are welcome and no prior knowledge or preparation is required. We request only that you bring your whole self and a willingness to share and to listen.
