Experience Sankofa Project, Tresidder Memorial Union, Wednesday, 20. November 2019

The EXPERIENCE SANKOFA PROJECT (ESP) Living Museum is an innovative installation exhibit that combines history, live performance art, and sacred altars into an interactive timeline of African and American history. Spearitwurx curates powerful and provocative period-specific “living installations” using lights, sounds, smells, and actors that evoke visceral emotions as an ode to African peoples’ greatness, oppression, resistance, and aspirations. From the Olduvai Gorge to Timbuktu, The Transatlantic Slave trade to Black Migration, The Harlem Renaissance to the Black Panthers, this exhibit brings history to life, highlighting the Bay Area’s specific contributions.
The year 2019 marks 400 years since the first ship landed in Jamestown, Virginia with a cargo of enslaved Africans. 400 years later, we have much to learn about the “peculiar institution” of slavery and its inter-generational impacts on all people. It is our goal that community will glean a better understanding of African/Black peoples’ contributions to human civilization and ignite our collective capacity to build empathy and solidarity to transform our social realities and create a positive future. The Experience Sankofa Project creates space to reflect on our past, remembering our dignity, truth & legacy of resilience. Please see the attached video for more information
