All are welcome to join us, whether you read music or 'catch' the music by ear. We'll gather in the Werlhi Chapel at the heart of the Eden campus, a comfortable, acoustically resonant space for unaccompanied singing. The chapel is located on the second floor of Press Hall and is fully acessible. There is ample parking around the campus. You are also welcome to join us for a second Community SING at Eden Seminary on Friday led by Alice Parker have delighted groups all over North America since she began leading them forty years ago. They invite people of all ages and backgrounds who wish to sing together. The music can be sacred or secular, sung without accompaniment with the aim of welcoming what singers can provide with their own voices and imagination. The focus is on melody—that which can be sung by one voice, that miraculous combination of words, rhythms and pitches. Ms. Parker teaches by modeling, ‘lining out’ the melody so that what the listener learns is a totally convincing, musically satisfying song. The group repeats each phrase, listening for ever more-subtle inflections, until the mood and sound of that melody are established. Then the group is invited to improvise a setting according to suggestions made by the leader: sing an echo, make a round, try an ostinato, or harmonize. Our Wednesday evening SING is sponsored by Music That Makes Community, a non-profit organization working with ecumenical communities and leaders to empower and liberate communities’ spiritual life through community event is part of Sharing the Song, a workshop for song leaders excited to nurture and sustain singing in their communities sponsored by Eden Seminary and Melodious Accord, a not-for-profit organization founded by Alice Parker dedicated to bringing together composers, performers, and listeners in the creation and re-creation of music.
