CoDiscovery MasterClass , Medinah Country Club, Friday, 03. April 2020

This workshop will be based upon what Bob Barkley and Nate Kohn Jr. PhD  called, “Three Phase ***** Education,” which includes:1. Relationship development through preclinical interviews and ongoing peer-to-peer discussions (through establishing INTERdependent  relationships with each person)2. Learning together through facilitated co-discovery, dialogue, values clarification and the establishment of relevance relative to what is learned.3. Goal-setting through envisioning, collaborative planning, negotiation, and workshop will take you into the world of brain anatomy, neuroscience, neuroeconomics, and psychoneuroendocrinology -the true drivers behind decision-making. Neuroeconomics is defined as an “interdisciplinary field which seeks to explain human decision-making, the ability to process multiple alternatives, and to follow a course of action.”
As dental professionals, we use objective thinking to try and render out “yes” to our thoughtful plans. Yet, we commonly experience denial, delay, or disregard for what we are attempting to teach, especially when our patients are confronted with complex problems, and they must therefore make expensive decisions related to those problems on short notice.
Simply put, when patients need to make decisions regarding deeply personal and complex problems, they also need proper leadership to help them to make those choices. And that in a nutshell, is the purpose behind Bob Barkley’s Three Phase ***** Education: To support better health-centered decision-making.
The title of this presentation is “Co-discovery: What, When, and Why.” And it is a two-day peer-to-peer conversation centered around how to best bring each new person into and through a practice. This approach is in opposition to a more rigid “my way or the highway” approach, and is specifically designed for dentists who are interested in transitioning their practice into a more relationship-based, health-centered model. The content of this meeting will be derived from the neuroscience, and psychology literature which supports how to best help others properly address complex problems, and will include a review of brain anatomy and function, for the purpose of helping participants understand that HOW we do things often has a much greater influence on others than the actual information we are attempting to convey.

Meeting objectives: To help each participant to:1. Better understand how the brain works and therefore how to leverage this knowledge to optimally structure each interaction with each patient.2. Lead patients toward better decision-making, and therefore increase practice profitability.3. Understand the Three Phase ***** Education process and why each step is so valuable.4. Understand when to use Three Phase ***** Education and when not to use it.5. Better understand how patients make decisions based on the principles of neuroeconomics and psychoneuroendocrinology.6. Understand how the profession of dentistry is changing, and how these concepts are essential to every dentist who aspires to create a truly relationship-based, health-centered practice.7. Create action steps which can be used to integrate these new perspectives toward patient development into their : presentation , discussion, review of videosPresented by Dr. Paul A. Henny, Gary Takacs, Dr. Brian Vence, and Lynne Turk, RDH

Comments from past Workshop Attendees:

I would strongly recommend this workshop, as it’s important to understand the mechanisms which drive the process of co-discovery, and which are therefore essential to the success of our ability to help our patients accept, own, and advance their M. This workshop on Co-discovery helped me to learn more about how the brain works with regard to receiving and processing information, as well as how to better communicate with my patients. This process will help my patients to choose better pathways toward higher levels of oral McCartney, DMD, FAGDAdel, GeorgiaThis way of practicing allows for true professional fulfillment in dentistry. The art of patient connection and interaction is getting lost as small intimate practices are being bought-up or pushed-out by large organizations which seem to be in it only for the profit. If we take the time to understand human behavior and “our ways”, then we will be able to achieve so much more personally and professionally! Tracy Poirier, RDHPremier Hygiene SolutionsOttawa, CanadaOutstanding! The best part of this experience was the coming together of dentists from across the country and world who are at different places in their practice development journey, and who have a deep and common admiration for Bob Barkley’s work. The amount of learning become exponential as each person’s interpretation and application of Barkley’s principles were shared.”Alice Lam DDSVisiting Faculty, The Pankey Institute Houston TexasThis workshop is for anyone who wants to develop a truly relationship-based dental practice. This approach to dentistry could save the profession of dentistry as we know it, while simultaneously providing maximum benefit to the public. I totally enjoyed the experience, and especially the opportunity to interact with all of the great people in attendance. Outstanding! Thanks Paul!Kevin Dougherty, DDSChatham Township, New JerseyYes, I most definitely recommend this course! The true Co-discovery process will be lost if it is not properly taught. Co-discovery is an approach which takes more time, but it is definitely well worth it! Steve Hart, DDSVisiting Faculty, The Pankey InstituteChapel Hill, NCIt was a privilege to be invited to join such an impressive group of professionals, who desire to help their patients make more healthy decisions. This was a truly exceptional experience for me. I hope that anyone who is interested in this approach, participates in this learning experience at some point, as it will be both unique and uplifting!Michael John McDevitt , DDS, MSPeriodontist
