What is a Ball? A “Ball” or an event that is marketed to the “ballroom community” is a social group of ***** & trans people of color who participate in competitions in which participants are judged and awarded prizes based on dance or “voguing” skills, costume or “effects,” and overall performance.  *****, as we’ve come to know them today, began in Harlem in the 1960s as a primarily Black and Latino/Hispanic countercultural expression of gender variance and performance. Boston’s ballroom community began in the early 1990’s and was initially driven by members of New York groups, but has since grown into a thriving Boston community with an identity all its own.  The vast majority of Boston’s ballroom community is comprised of LGBTQ people of color, between the ages of 18 and 29.
We are in a critical time to explore additional ways of generating support and engagement for LGBTQ communities of color. Institutional racism, heterosexism and transphobia are major barriers to finding safe and affirming events, social support and services for young ***** and trans people of color. In Massachusetts, young gay men of color and transgender people of color are over-represented among new HIV cases and are disproportionately burdened by other STIs. Ballroom events such as the “Looking Into World AIDS Day Ball” serve as community-level interventions, offering affirming spaces in which young ***** and trans people of color can access support and build community – reducing stigma and isolation, and enhancing knowledge about social support and health services.
Come celebrate the Boston-based Ball scene & fundraise for the Transgender Emergency Fund. All are welcome!
Athena Vaughn is Director of TransCEND (Transgender Care and Education Needs Diversity) at the AIDS Action Committee where she helps provide support and risk reduction services to transgender women. Athena is also President of the New England Ball Collective (NEBC) organizes ***** year-round for young ***** and trans people of color to access support and build community.
Mass NOW (the Massachusetts chapter of the National Organization for Women) is a member-based multi-strategy & multi-issue grassroots organization that has been pursuing gender equity in the Commonwealth for over 50 years. Mass NOW recently co-sponsored 'The Reset Ball' with NEBC this past spring in honor of Pride & the 50th anniversary of Stonewall.
Fierce Urgency of Now is designed to connect next gen young professionals of color with each other, organizations active in the space, business communities committed to talent retention and recruitment, and community service opportunities.
